no you like hearing i like that i like the marketing guru part
yeah that’s a good one
so uh today uh well first of all uh squirrel marketing we talk about everything marketing and we squirrel off in all directions it’s a lot like in real life your marketing plan your your day-to-day marketing activities you may start with a focus but you’re going to squirrel off in different directions and so uh it’s no different here that is what we do that’s what we do so today we’re going to talk about social media social media do’s and don’ts and some of the things that are pet peeves of ours and um what are you thinking uh there’s just social media is just so important to businesses nowadays that you you have to have an online presence in order to succeed whether it’s a small business or you’re a huge giant in whatever space you’re in you you need to have a good social media presence and strategy to go with that and i think that one of the the main pet peeves that i have is when businesses only post about their business i i think that uh you need to have some variety in your post you need to show that you’re not just a company that you’re you are human beings and you can post a you know you can post a trend when a trend is happening on twitter like a meme or something like that you can go with a hashtag and post a hashtag you can make a thanksgiving post and ask people what their favorite foods are just stuff like that that to to really you know add to your add to your variety that you have on social media because if you’re just posting about hey we sell this product we sell this product we sell this product that’s going to be a huge turn off for consumers so having that variety having that personality in your social media brand is super important well it’s social after all it’s social media so social is the big part of it and it’s the reason why people go there so if you talk about business on social media instantly people are gonna be kind of uh you know miffed about it yeah they really don’t want to be there uh they get advertising forced down their throat all the time and they don’t particularly want to talk about it with their friends so social media you have to be thoughtful you know in order to talk to people on social media about business things and uh you and i were talking yesterday about this and um social media is a great place for business um but it gets you to do it right so uh if you’re gonna like bring your business into conversations on that platform you have to do it the right way and it kind of depends on your business because yesterday i was telling you i think that um regular conversation about business is fine if you’re a cake decorator or are your business is fun you can talk about it. If your business is social then you can pretty much do it yeah if you run an amusement park if you are a dog groomer a sports team whatever all these kinds of things if you’re a roller rink you know um but if you sell insurance which is what our company does yeah you got to be real careful and so we have some tips and we’re going to bounce around here of course so keep listening but if you sell insurance or you do mortgage lending or you’re a realtor or things that are really i call it not sexy but now unless it’s not fun unless you’re on one of those netflix reality realtor shows like what’s it called something california or selling sunsets yeah right yeah one of those where you’re selling the multi-million dollar mansions that everyone wants to see then this yeah this lies to you and your client uh this week was the rock you know then maybe you can talk about it on social media but but otherwise if you’re just a salesperson out there trying to sell something that’s not fun and it’s not ice cream and puppy dogs then or you know gun range or all kinds of things if it’s on groupon you can pretty much talk about it on social media it’s on group i’m serious oh my gosh no that’s a great slogan right there if it’s on groupon you can talk about it you can post it exactly because groupon only takes things that are fun for real i mean i was selling insurance before i did marketing for insurance and uh i tried to get some stuff on groupon before and they’re like that’s just not fun we just don’t really want to do that so they turned me down yeah and they said okay here’s the deal to be on groupon it’s gonna have to be fun or engaging or somehow social related you know so it is a kind of a good test if you see it on groupon you can pretty much talk about it um but anyway we scrolled off of there a little bit it happens i mean i i think just the overall you have to have variety in your post it can’t be the same thing every day well people unfriend you for example no question i mean if well especially and i found this i’ve i’ve found this out over the past few months when i’ve really been you know working on the social media for for us here twitter for the insurance space is not as effective as facebook or even linkedin for that matter is i just think the demographic is completely different so you really have to know your uh this is a squirrel you really have to know your demographic as far as your product and what you’re promoting in your business and all that because if you’re marketing insurance to people the demographic on twitter is going to be way lower than what you’re looking for so yeah you you really have to know where to put your resources in time and and how to allocate that well that’s like the swot analysis we did where you’re and you analyze your strengths and weaknesses yes no question and so that part of that is knowing your market knowing who you’re focused on attracting knowing what you want them to do when they see your ad or your whatever so you have to know exactly what you want someone to do first of all and you got to know who that person is you got to you got to know what kind of person you’re going after and what you want them to do so those are the really basics and then on social media keep it real simple and understand people are not reading social posts thinking about buying something no never never so offer something interesting something fun something endearing if it if it causes you to go ah or if it’s good it’s pretty good or if it causes you to laugh or cry or anything emotional related which you know our world is becoming more and more emotional apparently then you know you’re gonna you’re gonna be good on social media so uh i remember uh talking to jaden here uh about memes and we were creating memes yeah and i said i said we need a picture that you don’t have to write anything on to to become somehow uh to have a reaction to it to become involved in this whatever and then the words just augment that yep no question so you don’t have a picture that you’re like what you know where it’s boring right and then have cool words you got to have a cool picture and then augment it with words and so uh and there was another one squirrel but i did this thing of betty white and she had a martini in her hand and uh cash was raining down on her and she had sunglasses on and she was just like living the high life and it was amazing awesome and so i got this picture and i made a meme out of it and it said um i said the the caller said you won the pottery it took me a second to get that that’s pretty funny nobody got it people around me were like that’s not funny yes it’s funny she thought she won the lottery and she’s partying it up right so anyway you got to be careful that uh that first of all it’s not just you who gets your right it has to be it has to be a wide audience that gets it you’re gonna have to bounce it off some people that you care about and then don’t get upset if they don’t get it yeah you have to have thick skin i got upset though i was like i’ve worked a long time on this it was fun but uh no i i have sort of an eccentric uh humor so if if you get it you get it if you don’t you don’t yeah social media though um some practical tips real quick um if it’s gonna be a post and you’re posting in your normal thread then make it fun make it uh something that someone learns from or uh provide a link you know uh don’t just say um everybody needs life insurance and i’m a life insurance salesperson you should get your life insurance through me blah blah blah right they’re gonna unfriend you and they should yeah that’s just stupid what you need to say is um let’s see let’s let’s do this practical um so you would say a while back i took a look at my family situation and i didn’t have any life insurance so i decided to get some uh i’m in that business if you want to talk about protecting your family and give me a call that’s okay it’s borderline well i think but it’s a civilization of it you’ve got to be more personal it makes it better for sure because if you like you said if you’re just hey i sell life insurance come buy it for me not going to work but if you’re like hey this impact that impacted me in a positive way more you’re more inclined to get business that way it’s um it’s a it’s an intent thing so um what i’ve found is a good good rule of thumb on social media is that if your post is all about you and it’s not funny like you know if you post all about you and it’s you falling through your roof and you know you didn’t die right um and it’s funny then that’s fine but so your post should not be self-serving that’s the deal yeah absolutely it should be to help other people so if you if you post something that and you’re telling a story and it’s endearing uh or if you post something that teaches somebody something that’s important then you’re giving and you want to give 80 and take 20. always i always give more than i than i take and sometimes i don’t think at all that’s a good rule i think the 80 percent give 20 take because if you’re showing that you’re more than willing to go the extra mile to help somebody out or help a company out then you’ll they’ll be more than willing to give you that 20 back so it’s while it is 80 20 it’s really you know it’s a scale it’s a scale um but what i’ve seen with a lot of salespeople is that they’ll just talk about something that happened in their day so they’ll be they’ll be like um today i met this lady and it was really cool and they’ll tell a quick little story and in that story they explain how they helped her well people aren’t stupid they know if this person was going through this and you did this to help them and you thought that that was a really cool day for you and that’s your post they know what you do for a living yeah i mean you don’t have to spell it right you can say you know here’s a link if y’all if y’all want to know more about this this topic and then you know let people do it um but the point is for years i did these little pop shop postings trying to get business and i really never got any business out of it i mean i was in the mortgage business at the time for years doing this and i really never got much business out of that so i i think that the facebook ads are there for a reason and if you’re really really trying to promote a business that isn’t social like you said utilize those facebook ads can be really valuable if you know how to do them correctly and i think that’s something that that companies really should use more is is more facebook ads and less of organic posting ads basically on yeah yeah because organic posting is a social space for people to have conversations with people they like correct that’s why the thing is called like and that’s why your groups are called friends your friends who like each other most of the time or you unfriend them right that’s how it works it sells as well as i understand so if you if you’re talking to your friends if you wouldn’t walk up to your friend at a barbecue and say something then don’t post it on the social media right so if you’re walking up and you’re and you’re talking to your friends at a barbecue sipping on a beer having a burger or whatever and you start talking about your day and you talk about how you helped somebody and you thought it was pretty cool you could say that you can do that on social media absolutely but you wouldn’t sit there and browbeat your friends saying have you looked at your life insurance recently how much life insurance do you have do you really know if it’s enough people don’t want that on social media nor do they want to hear it at a barbecue they don’t really want to hear it at a barbecue so if you’re going to do that kind of thing if you want to hit somebody between the eyes with something and make them think and do a do a good compelling ad then do it as an ad and you can set whatever kind of a budget you want for the day it doesn’t matter it can be a small budget it could be a large budget but it’ll sit there and trickle every single day and if you want to know more about facebook ads we may do one just on facebook ads but so what are some of the other don’ts like so we know if it’s self-serving don’t do it but you were talking about your pet peeves yeah you have to avoid posting more than probably twice a day if you’re a business because if you start posting more than that your feed p people’s people start to get flooded with your information they’ll get tired of it and they’ll end up either unfollowing you or unliking you or whatever and you know that’s the worst case scenario so i think that there’s there are there’s multiple you know studies that say there’s certain times of the day where posting will yield the most engagement uh it really depends on on what you look at i know for us we usually do it at 10 a.m and 2 p.m right around those times but there are some studies that say oh you should post it 7 p.m and at you know noon so it really depends on what your business strategy is but uh don’t post like six times a day about your business or even you know the fun things for that matter i think i know for me personally if i saw for instance bj’s restaurant if i liked them on facebook or something and i saw six posts from them a day i get really tired of it so i think you have to be you have to limit your posts and that’s where the quality over quantity comes in make sure your posts are good and not just you know there to have a post up there make sure that there’s substance in them yeah again think about the other person so if you’re going to annoy somebody you should probably not do that that’s that’s the overarching thing is don’t be annoying don’t be annoying and don’t be self-serving um well and you know not on a business note but you just don’t have a normal personal note if i see somebody posting on social media and and they constantly said the same thing and it’s all just reposts yeah they don’t actually have anything original thought to think about because they’re so beaten up by this influx of news and information that all they can do is simply just proliferate it they can just they sit there and just repost and repost and repost it’s so annoying i’ve i almost unfriended one of my family members um because of it you have to have original thought you gotta have something to say i mean even you know there there are features now where even if you want to repost you can still repost with your own comment sure you know absolutely you can sit there and share it and then you can talk about it that’s that’s commentary you’re supposed to you’re supposed to say something about it not just take a look at this take a look at this dude i mean seriously i was thinking do you have nothing better to do i’ve seen like eight or ten of these an hour i mean yeah i mean that’s ridiculous it’s it is so i i don’t we don’t have to talk about that anymore because everybody knows it’s annoying talking about it’s annoying right so social media so um so facebook the repetition too many posts too too close together self-serving just be personable that’s all it is i mean that’s what you need to think about before every before you hit that send button every time just be personable make sure it’s not serving you only make sure it’s serving the people that follow you and your community as a whole yeah as if you’re at a backyard barbecue with them yeah and then on videos um i wanted to talk about this for just a minute because i’ve noticed some things when it comes to sharing videos and anybody can do a selfie video and uh they’re really beneficial you do a selfie video and talk about something uh in fact if you’ve got something to say especially as as it pertains to what you do for a living you could do a selfie video about it instead of a word post people will sit there and listen to you on a video looking at your face more than they would want to read something it’s it’s a i don’t know it’s a weird thing yeah that is strange but it happens and another thing that happens is that uh facebook is greedy and so if you want your post to be uh seen by a lot of people and you want it to stay on top and that kind of thing then you want to put a video up that only lives on facebook so for instance uh here at work we’ll do a video and we’ll host it on vimeo let’s say or maybe if you use youtube whatever we don’t use youtube because they advertise competitors right there behind your video and that’s not something you want so we use vimeo but so when you post a video that’s hosted on vimeo and you have to click the video on facebook that then opens some other website yeah or opens uh vimeo to watch it facebook doesn’t like that so facebook likes content that keeps people on facebook they like them yeah native and that’s happening more and more uh what you’re going to see with google and what you’ve been seeing with google is that they want you to stay on their search engine they don’t even want you going to people’s websites oh yeah they’re not necessarily a search engine anymore well that’s what’s happening with google and youtube because they’re owned by the same company now is that when you search something go to the videos tab on whatever you’re searching you can watch it right then and there exactly they no longer take you to the platform to watch the video unless you click on the link then you’re not go you’re not going anywhere and you can even make it bigger right there right there without leaving the platform and so that that makes them more money and they they like that google does like money it’s pretty funny it’s pretty funny how like the all the bigwigs at google are um you know like leftist democrat people but they’re counting i didn’t know we were going there today it doesn’t matter it’s true they are they they lean they lean left and that’s fine but they’re capitalists yeah so how can you be an enormous capitalist and then be against capitalism that doesn’t make any sense well it’s like zuckerberg and i mean all those guys exactly is that hypocritical or what is it i don’t understand uh these guys make gobs of money but they’re against capitalism that’s just weird but anyway so google but anyways but anyway it was true it’s nothing any new or it’s just real it’s true but so uh on google they don’t want you to leave google on facebook they don’t want you to leave facebook if you’re on youtube they don’t want you to leave youtube and this is this is a trend that i’m seeing it’s huge it has huge implications especially with google because they were supposed to be a search engine and uh it’s kind of like um our our agents were at walmart to sell insurance to people who were walking through walmart and then walmart started an insurance company yeah right in the middle of our big medicare season literally right as it began walmart was just like oh by the way yeah it’s called walmart insurance company first of all i’m not buying insurance from walmart i’m i’m not buying tires at walmart um i’ll get paper towels at walmart you know and and you know tires are fine but the person putting the tire on i want them to be well trained yeah i don’t want them to have missed lug nut day you know in the training that would not be great that would not be good so or you know or tire bead day so you you go around the corner and you lose air that happened actually a while back but so um facebook likes information that stays on facebook so if you’re gonna post a video and you take a little selfie video upload it to facebook and let it live there and if you’re in business and you’re doing let’s say you want your video that’s on your website or your or maybe you host it on vimeo like we do if you want that on facebook then make a little separate version of it yep so just tweak it a little bit you don’t want it exactly the same if it’s the exact same minutes and seconds and it has the exact same content because now google can go in there and transcribe your video and know what the words are if it’s the same words you don’t just want to cut a couple of frames off you you need to have some separate words in there too i mean so when you’re editing make it a little different cut out a section for one leave the section for another whatever but make it different make it different lengths make it different words somewhere in there and have one that that stays on facebook and one that goes for your normal platform that’s the point if you do a facebook ad and it takes people off of facebook and takes them to your website you’re going to pay more for it and it’s not going to be presented as much it’s just they’re going to make money if you have a link in your facebook ad is that what you’re saying yeah well if your call to action takes people away from facebook it’s not gonna get as good attraction and it’s gonna cost you more they’re just greedy that way so if it keeps people on facebook and you can do your thing right there in facebook and the and your call to action is in the video such as a hotline phone number yeah we call them a helpline phone number but so if your helpline phone number is right there in your video and the video lives on facebook you’re going to have better traction it’s going to be cheaper for you over the long run that’s what we’ve got that’s that’s about all the time we got yep awesome all right well till next time we’ll see you next week [Music] you Up next
