What is Google Analytics? - The Monday October 5th Roundup

we're not allowed to mention any Monsanto products in this 'round up'
Fall is here, quarter 3 is over, and quarter 4 begins. Hopefully winter will mean more people sitting inside, and thus more great blog posts coming up.
This week we've got the first SEO light (ok, absent) roundup in quite a while. Starting with measuring social media, preventing email unsubscribes, explaining Google Analytics and moving on to measuring the success of branding.
Internet Marketing and SEO
- Didn't I promise no more Huo Mah? Yeah, but its a slow week for internet marketing posts, and this one is pretty good: Measuring Social Media Success, technically by Terry VanHorne of International Website Builders
- Next up, a bit of advice for people sad over their email unsubscribes: It's not over 'til it's over. A pretty good look at how to maintain email subscribers, and a nice juxtaposition to the old pre-CANSPAM tactics.
- A last minute addition, but this was too cool not to include: how spammy sites cheat their page rank and other spammy SEO tricks.
Technology
- From Alaspooryorik, Introduction to the ColdSpring Framework Presentation. This is all a little (ok, a lot) above me, but if you're looking to handle dependency injection, inversion of control and aspect oriented programming on a Coldfusion framework… well, it should be of use.
- Now this I can understand! Smashing has a great primer to CSS, covering topics such as the box model, floats, and positioning.
Web Analytics
- Nice and easy again, Google has an overview of the GA platform. Why am I posting something so basic? Because this week some one told me that they don't use GA because their clients don't use Google search, and as such GA wouldn't help them. Startled by this level of misinformation I realized that Google needed to produce some kind of "this is what GA does" campaign. Lo and behold…
- Not as easy, but by no means an AlasPoorYorik, everyone's favourite Analytics Evangelist discusses Analytics & Metrics for Branding Campaigns
Web Usability
- In a post that seems oddly familiar 90% of Everything explains how not to design your calls to action (with illustrations!).
Miscellaneous links of the week:
- Strange statistics this week. It seems that women and teens are driving up mobile web use. Meanwhile is seems that not just women, but women 35 to 60 are the main users of music sites. My only problem with this statistic is that it doesn't differentiate between music gossip and music listening, though it does note the relation to the movement away from gossip mags towards gossip sites.
- Finally, if you ever wanted to know how Google (the company) works, Businessweek has a whopping six page article on whether Google can stay on top of the web.
